Stimulus Package Extends Dependent Health Insurance Coverage to Age 29
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), popularly known as the stimulus package, has extended eligibility for young adults to be covered by parental health insurance until they are 29 years old. This provision applies to policies issued, renewed, or modified on or after September 1, 2009.
Eligibility requirements include:
Parent’s coverage
- Group policy that includes dependent coverage
- Issued in New York State
- Not a self-insured plan
Young Adult
- Must be unmarried and 29 or younger
- Not eligible for health insurance through own employer
- Lives or works in New York or insurance company service area
- Not covered by Medicare
This provision does not apply to Health NY obtained through an employer but is applicable to COBRA/State Continuation coverage and individual Healthy NY plans.
